[D&D 3.5] Eilistraee - Divinità, Clero, Eletto e Changedance: Ed Greenwood abbraccia l' LGBTQ+ ? [V.M.18]

Il passaggio, di cui ho offerto il link più in alto, è il seguente: "Yes, you heard me right: there now ARE a few males among her church, but to enter it they have all "Danced The Changedance" and spent time as female, just as Mystra caused Elminster to spend time as Elmara - - and for the same reasons: greater understanding and sensitivity of "the life of the other gender." One cannot truly feel the Divine Dance of Eilistraee PROPERLY except as a female, and so her (still very rare, few, and generally secretive about it) male priests must spend some time as a female (not just for the duration of a ritual, but they must do some everyday living as a female). The most accomplished drow, elf, half-elf, and human male priests seem to feel the need to take female form for some days every few years or so (if they wish to "cleave more fully to the Goddess" and thus rise in levels), and most spend longer and longer times in female form. Not all female priests of the Goddess fully trust the males, and they don't tend to rise much in the church hierarchy (no matter what character levels they achieve).

More than that, many drow priestesses of Eilistraee are unhappy about this, and may prove hostile (not to the point of violence or refusal to accept or aid, but with a coldness in manner and a wary "always watching over" any males, until they achieve acceptance on a personal level [e.g. "I still don't hold with allowing males - - males! - - to join the dances, but Elorand can be trusted; he's proven himself over and over, and don't think we haven't tested him. Other males, I still don't trust!"). Eilistraee has always had enough personal contact with her clergy that none of them would think of disbelieving that she truly means this "new way" to occur and to be followed - - and no established priestess of Eilistraee will renounce this new order, either. ("Reluctantly accepting and unhappily coping" is a good description of their state; "defying the goddess and rejecting males or trying to trick or lead them into fatal mishaps so we can be rid of them" would NOT be an accurate characterization.)".

NB: Since the article discusses topics related to sexuality, gender reassignment, or particularly radicalized fictional civilizations in which members of one sex prevail and have the right of life and death over members of the opposite sex, it is not recommended for younger readers.
It is for this reason alone that I have included a disclaimer by V.M. 18, even though I know this serves as a warning to those who perhaps shouldn't be reading this article.

Talking about Eilistraee, for me, is a bit like talking about someone family.
In the long years of my wanderings through the Forgotten Realms, no deity has had a greater weight and importance, for inspiration and gameplay, than the Dark Maiden.

The drow, the evil dark elves who dwell in the Underdark—a deep subterranean region miles from the sun-kissed surface, where everything is lethal and dangerous, where there is no room for mercy, tolerance, or friendship, but only oppression, the exploitation of others for one's own purposes, mutually taking advantage of those capable of moving up the chaotic yet rigid social hierarchy—have always aroused immense interest in fantasy literature.

R.A. Salvatore, introducing the famous renegade drow Drizzt do'Urden, not only depicted the most fascinating and terrifying fantasy society, but created its strongest counterpart, a dark elf who at heart felt "different" because he was non-violent, non-evil, afflicted by that emotion that is a lethal weakness in a matriarchal society like the drow: pity.
For many decades, as the adventures of Drizzt, who had meanwhile moved to the Surface, unfolded, piece after piece of what was a fascinating mosaic was added: dark elves live by the law of cunning, deception, social climbing, defrauding others while maintaining a semblance of respectability, destroying other Houses by accumulating evidence against them, planting spies and informants, betraying in every way possible, even within their own family, to continue climbing the hierarchy.
Over everything, the oppressive figure of Lolth, the Spider Queen, reigns omnipresent. She is the only certainty in drow life: drow females are larger, more powerful, and favored by the Spider Goddess, while males cannot even access the priesthood, and at best, they can become capable warriors or powerful wizards, but they are still, and in any case, INFERIOR BEINGS.

For example, the weakest drow priestess of Lolth is still held in higher social esteem than a gifted and capable male archmage.

This is also why the hero Drizzt do'Urden's escape from such a hostile society, to try to gain acceptance—a word that seems to have enormous importance today, even when speaking of a saga that is almost thirty years old—on the Surface, where everyone fears and hates the drow, added tragedy to the need to be understood, integrated into civil society, and have a family.
For this, Drizzt will welcome the deity Mielikki, Unicorn Goddess, associated with Rangers and kind-hearted itinerant rangers, and will bond with the Dwarf King Bruenor Battlehammer, his adoptive daughter Cattie-Brie, the barbarian Wulfgar, and the halfling Regis.
This lengthy introduction stems from the desire to contextualize my reflections on the goddess Eilistraee, which, for obvious reasons, takes on a much broader meaning within her dogma.

Eilistraee, daughter of Corellon Larethian, the main deity of the Elves, and of his consort who later took the name of Lolth, is a very important deity for all those drow who, like Drizzt do'Urden, flee from the wickedness of a society where a male, and a drow, can only be evil and servants, instead wish to escape those oppressions and carve out a place for themselves in the light of the sun, which, I remind you, for the dark elves is a real torture since they are accustomed to the eternal darkness of the Underdark: therefore, the drow who follow a path dedicated to good, want to integrate - another key word - and in a certain sense also cultivate the cult of themselves, of their own being in the arts, to the point of reaching a sort of hedonism, find in Eilistraee a Chaotic Good deity, who welcomes those who flee from the evil of Lloth and the unscrupulous hierarchy that sees the creatures of Females, especially clerics, favored.
If this had been written today, I suppose, R.A. Salvatore would hardly have had the opportunity to describe a similar society: in an era when crimes against women are undoubtedly more sensitive, some right-thinking people would surely have taken it as a sort of attack on the female world; in these cases, being a "niche" literature has its advantages, at least until it becomes mainstream.

Coming to us, then, recently, while I was recovering the archetype I had entirely conceived and produced in The Chosen of Eilistraee, which I had already published first through Kaosonline and later on Isola Illyon, with the intention of updating and republishing it—it's still a youthful work, however much appreciated by some official D&D creators—I came across a series of articles talking specifically about Eilistraee and something that Ed Greenwood, one of the most important creators of Forgotten Realms gaming material and novels in particular (a random Elminster, therefore the most universally powerful character there is), had written for a column he personally edited, the full transcripts of which can be found here.

THE DOGMA OF EILISTRAEE AND WHY IT IS (WAS) TRULY INCLUSIVE

Before delving into the topic of Greenwood's article, let's look at the foundations of the church of Eilistraee.

If the theocratic society of the drow cannot ignore the firm and violent grip of Lolth, the Spider Queen, in which being born with the wrong "attributes" is comparable to a handicap given the firm and terrible matriarchal hold over it, this is precisely why an alternative is needed: the most important archmage of Menzoberranzan, let's say the drow capital in The Underdark, Gromph Baenre, repeatedly throughout the novels laments being born male, and bitterly wonders what heights of power a person with his mind and dedication to study could have achieved if only he had been born a different sex.
Drow males are a kind of cannon fodder, useful as wizards or warriors who must protect the "females" of the family, the priestesses, enchantresses, or even sorceresses, although it is highly frowned upon for a drow woman to dedicate herself to arcane magic and not to the priesthood.
It is no coincidence that many dark elves form brigades that go into hiding and flee the grasp of their matrons, more like mistresses than family.
Whether for reproductive purposes or for some sacrifice, drow males know full well that they almost never have a particularly long life expectancy, and that their survival depends on how useful they can be to the matrons of their House, to their allied priestesses, and even, even, to their very enemies. They must always plan an escape route should their family's fortunes take a turn for the worse: when one House destroys another, obviously in order to safeguard "decency," as if out of sight, out of mind, all members of the defeated family are annexed, the priestesses "acquired" by the victorious House, or killed if they prove so stupid as to fail to understand which way the wind is blowing and seize the opportunity to join the side of the strongest.
Everything in a dark elf's life depends, literally, on the whims of Lolth, a goddess who might raise a lesser House beyond all hope just to punish some higher House for having offended her in some way, or simply to sow chaos in drow society.

Yes, being a dark elf doesn't have to be stressful at all.

Now, based on what's been said, it's clear that a dark elf, especially a male, might want to flee, risk a thousand deaths along the kilometers of tunnels that separate him from the Surface, and try a better fate up there, where the mere appearance of a drow is enough to scare the living daylights out of anyone and he can enjoy his (terrible) reputation.
It's common for the sight of a single dark elf on the Surface to portend bloody raids, dire omens of war, or simply a raid because, as the proverb says, "Do not worry about the dark elf you see, but about those you do not see."
In this light, a deity like Eilistraee, of good alignment, who invites us to reconquer the Surface by abandoning the Underdark and a life of darkness, both physically and morally, is a godsend, the only real beacon of hope that can push the outcasts and the desperate, drow male and female, to embrace her faith, if only for initial convenience.
Eilistraee's precepts of welcoming others, of strengthening severed bonds with the surface elves, of mutual protection, and of fighting evil creatures.

Certain functions, such as the Race and the Hunt, important events in the clergy, represent for the followers of the Dark Maiden something that must necessarily be performed as well as possible. The Hunt, in particular, involves participating in a real hunt against some evil creature that frightens or harasses a settlement, preferably an elven one, thus cementing the concept that sees Eilistraee's followers as protectors of anyone in need.
One usually participates in this with little or no clothing at all, armed only with a melee or ranged weapon—a bastard sword or a composite bow—to test one's courage. This aspect of nudity, also understood as putting oneself on the line, showing oneself without any kind of subterfuge, without "disguise," becomes fundamental from an ideological standpoint, as anyone dealing with drow should rightfully expect a dagger between the shoulder blades at the first opportunity, and allows us to move on to the next level.
The Run, another ritual of some importance, more simply involves going to bring aid, even material, to communities in need.
The Dance, which is celebrated at night, in the moonlight around the fire, sees Eilistraee's faithful dance naked, sometimes with a ritual weapon—a bastard sword—and literally give themselves over to joy...even physically, if necessary.

The fact that these events also attract curious non-drow audiences is also an important step towards increasing awareness of the Dark Maiden, validating the concept that "every drow is evil," and normalizing the culture of a people who, at least 95% of them, are accustomed to violence from their mothers' wombs, but who don't necessarily have to embrace it.

Although we're not talking about bacchanalian-like rituals—since they're certainly not sexualized festivities like those of the goddess Sune or, even worse, Sharess—the beauty of drow priestesses can undoubtedly play a fundamental role in making Eilistraee's cause "to heart," and even ordinary women, human, or even female.

The passage, for which I provided the link above, is as follows:"Yes, you heard me right: there now ARE a few males among her church, but to enter it they have all "Danced The Changedance" and spent time as female, just as Mystra caused Elminster to spend time as Elmara - - and for the same reasons: greater understanding and sensitivity of "the life of the other gender." One cannot truly feel the Divine Dance of Eilistraee PROPERLY except as a female, and so her (still very rare, few, and generally secretive about it) male priests must spend some time as a female (not just for the duration of a ritual, but they must do some everyday living as a female).

In short, to summarize the text, which you can also translate into Italian using the appropriate function, one cannot properly perceive and embrace Eilistraee's Dance except as a woman. Therefore, priests, especially those wishing to advance in the Church, must transform, frequently and over the course of years, into their female counterparts for increasingly longer periods, also because, from what we read, priestesses do not trust "males." Furthermore, given the polytheistic nature of Faerûn, only 10 or 12% of the drow who escaped from Lolth's clutches appear to be exclusively loyal to Eilistraee, so her clergy would be modeled after this (limited) number of followers.
Now, to put it unprofessionally, to the core of the bullshit: this is a classic case of an author going against himself. While he certainly can't blame such an oversight on his age, given that the content was shared in 2006 and he was 46 at the time, it seems to me that Greenwood didn't quite understand what he was talking about and made a significant blunder. I can't even begin to list the reasons why everything I read in that article, in the So Saith Ed (and he said a damn thing!), is so unsatisfactory, but I'll try.

First of all, I can even understand asserting that it's important for a male, especially a drow, to also experience life as a woman in order to be part of the clergy, but for reasons very different from those he explains and adduces.
The example of Elminster, transformed for a time into Elmara, a human woman, doesn't particularly fit. While it's true that El had to assume a female appearance and physiognomy to experience what others, especially the fairer sex, experience—he's also a bit misogynistic—it's certainly true that he saw his gender identity change because, quite simply, there were a lot of powerful people who wanted him dead, which is why making him disappear for a few years was certainly a smart move on Mystra's part.

So, passing himself off as a woman was both a way to interface with the feminine and a practical way to survive. And that's fine.

But from that moment on, while still serving Mystra, Elminster, as far as I know, hasn't had to assume other identities, other genders, or anything else: the lesson, in short, was learned then, especially considering the large number of descendants he later spread across Faerûn. So why would it be understandable for a drow to embrace a female version of himself? The simple act of literally stepping into the shoes of a drow female, dealing with her anxieties and worries, even the problems of everyday life, so that there is a true understanding between the two sexes, is essential if one wants to come to an understanding, as it's plausible to think that drow males harbor a healthy resentment toward all females of their species.

But this can happen once, and by free choice, certainly not by coercion and constantly.

Secondly (cit), given all the things stated above, a dark elf would once again feel diminished if he were to think that, to be important in the Church of Eilistraee, especially as a minister, he must occasionally, especially for long periods, renounce his identity and effectively become a female being. He will therefore ask himself, in the long run, if being male drow is really a bad thing, and I wouldn't be surprised if at this point they devoted themselves more to Vhaerun or Selvetarm, who certainly don't care about this sort of thing.

Reading that Eilistraee's priestesses might harbor skepticism or doubts about male priests, regardless of class level, is the furthest thing I've ever understood from Eilistraee's profess. Given this premise, she simply becomes a good version of Lolth 2.0.

The idea that this Changedance ritual should be among the requirements for becoming a Chosen One of the deities completes the picture: this move, in my opinion, is also a kind of "political" suicide, given that we're still talking about a goddess of Minor rank, who strives to gain support and forge lasting relationships with other good deities. It's also a clear contradiction to what is derived from religious dogma and context, and she's trying to gain favor among the exiled dark elves abandoning the Underdark.
I therefore doubt that, given this situation, drow who are emerging from the Surface for the first time, after escaping years of psychological and physical torment at the hands of female members of their own race, would accept being slapped down by another deity who values women more than the men of the dark elf race.

It may seem like little, but the characters I've handled, especially Asrafil Ioelthrech (a bard/favored soul/mystical star elf theurge CB of Eilistraee), even without knowing anything about this article, have always been handled in the name of tolerance, respect, and inclusion, whether they were elves or dark half-elves or members of persecuted races. Indeed, being a harpist, Asrafil assumed a fictional identity, that of an attractive human woman, and sought to emphasize male/female equality in the game, highlighting the importance of the sacred feminine—the influences of The Da Vinci Code were also strong in me at the time.

While I can conceptually congratulate myself, because I was already on this wavelength, and while I absolutely recognize the importance of female characters, especially those belonging to the clergy, Asrafil would NEVER have dreamed of preaching to any character the importance of abandoning one's own sex to embrace another to better understand Eilistraee, because it would have been, quite simply, discriminatory.
Now, there's no doubt that what Greenwood asserted twenty years ago cannot be linked to any movement some would call "woke," or a movement of gender identity or battle of the sexes, so let's dismiss this potential objection.
The writer is the most open and tolerant of all human identities, and this must be reiterated, just as it must be reiterated that consistency must never be compromised, even when the author himself disavows something, partially backtracks, or makes corrections.

Ed's article, which is very arbitrarily praised as "the creator of the Realms, and until disavowed by Wizards' material, what he says is law," is simply a classic case of trying to express a concept better and managing to make it worse: essentially, it legitimizes the fact that a person, unless they are "the other," simply can't understand what that person feels. And maybe that's even partly true, if it weren't for that little thing, invented a while ago, called EMPATHY, for crying out loud.
If I were to take what Pirlwood writes at face value, then I'd be perfectly justified in being a misogynistic, toxic, wretched man because, oh, I can't understand a woman, since I can't transform myself into one.
I can't understand a black man, until I become one, so I can be racist because I'll never understand him, since I can't transform myself into one.
I can't understand a child, an elderly person, or a homosexual, because, not being one, I can't do it, or I can't do it well.

This is reverse racism: it's nonsense because, once again, Eilistraee is conceptually the most inclusive deity there is, and this is demonstrated by the fact that I had already unknowingly arrived at it.
Just when, ironically, Ed Greenwood brought up that comment.

Now, it's quite clear that this series of comments had little weight, because despite the forums where users were very happy with this freedom, and even proposed creating the first trans characters, all this was neither usable in the game, nor did it contribute much to the roleplay.
Without venturing into arguments for which I'm not fully equipped, I can assume that anyone who transitions, from male to female or vice versa, in our reality does so because, quite simply, there's no magic wand that allows one to make this kind of transition without much attention, care, a healthy psychological journey, and, only as a last resort, surgery.

Well, while I don't want to appear rude, given that this "magic wand" EXISTS in a fantasy setting, given that even the most inexperienced magician can cast Alter Self fairly easily, and the most capable ones won't have much difficulty achieving the goal of Metamorphosis, what's the point of creating a transgender character when, indeed, one can become, even permanently, the other sex?
If a person considers and feels they possess another sexuality, another emotionality, they feel trapped in a body they don't really feel... D&D allows you to overcome this, and in the power pyramid, I'd say quite easily, so the concept of "trans"—I hope I'm not mistaken or insensitive in saying this—is difficult to reconcile in an RPG like Dungeons & Dragons.
A character can certainly be referred to as someone who previously belonged to the male or female gender, but once they've made Metamorphosis permanent or gotten into the habit of constantly casting Alter Self extensively, they become permanently either male or female.
So, again, why is it necessary to introduce gender issues into a role-playing game, which is, par excellence, the most friendly place I know, where I've seen left-wing and right-wing, straight and gay, rich and poor play at the same table?
If something makes sense, if it's introduced in a nuanced way as a color or a gameplay option, then it makes sense and thus enriches the game. However, if a nuance becomes a rule, this kind of imposition is difficult to accept, at least for me.
Eilistraee certainly has a component that emphasizes the importance of female followers, as in the Sword Dancer Prestige Class, which is not coincidentally accessible only to characters of that sex; yet, Greenwood himself contradicted himself by saying that, however, with the passage of time, Sword Dancers would surely appear, and therefore male.
What, then, is the meaning, the truth?
The answer, which will surprise many, is "no sense, no truth."
Authors, while undoubtedly the most legitimate, if not the only ones, to talk about their work, are nevertheless, like us, also passionate fans, and it's possible that they might speak or provide information that could easily set a precedent, even when that wasn't the intention. This also happened with Rowling, who sometimes introduced retcons or clarifications to things that were obviously never said or hinted at in the books, thus causing more confusion than anything else. I remember, for example, that in an interview, when asked why characters from certain religions, like Jews, didn't appear, she instead replied that, SURELY, of course, there was a guy named Anthony Goldstein from Ravenclaw who was Jewish, and there were certainly also LGBT characters or characters associated with other religious faiths, with the sole exception of Wicca.
It's clear that all these things, even if they come from the author, are retcons or post-hoc corrections, just like the introduction of the Maledictus concept in the Harry Potter world and the transformation of Nagini from a normal snake—normal, anyway—into a cursed human who spends increasingly more time in animal form. While Nagini does, yes, evoke the term "naga," which D&D fans are well aware of, I doubt Rowling originally intended to make Voldemort's snake a fully-fledged human.
Likewise, I can easily take Ed Greenwood's statements as an attempt to better clarify, and ultimately mess up, the world belonging to Eilistraee.

Anyway, since I've gone on much longer than expected, I'll post the revised Eilistraee Archetype in a later article.

[GDR D&D 3.5] La storia di Clio, l'Ancella di Lathander, l'ex Guardia Nera di Xvim (Bane) Parte 3 || The story of Clio, The Lathander's Handmaid, former Blackguard of Xvim (Bane) Part 3

The English version is further down the page.

Era bastato uno sguardo, perchè ci riconoscessimo a vicenda.

Part 3 - The Gauntlet of Challenge

Eventually, by now in the year 1368, I became a Black Sword, a title among the highest that a non-priest could achieve: being a Black Guard gave me power and communion with my God, but between me and a cleric there was still an abyss of power and awareness about the divine.

Perhaps it was precisely for this reason that on the 3rd day of the second decade of Eleasias, I was given a task for which I seemed to be the only member cut. In hindsight, I still wonder if my "companions" hoped I would succeed in the task or if I would fail and, better yet, perish.

It was about corrupting the no longer young Sir Alfric Von Khellen, paladin of Torm of Waterdeep: the old man, over fifty years old, had retired to private life after the death of his wife and, although he sometimes participated in some functions and ceremonies for his God, most of the time he lived in solitude, writing stories and memoirs, books of faith and advice for young knights.

Last but not least, he was said to have had great ties with the Harpers and corrupting him and becoming their concubine and enslaving him to my desires, assuming the role of castellan, wife or lover, would have been an extremely important move in the chessboard of that region and of his Church.

I realize, however, that this is the second time I mention the so-called "Harp bearers" but, for the benefit of those who do not know some of the secrets of Faerun, here are just a few words about them.

The Harpers are a secret organization that believes that each individual can make a difference: by pushing and inciting the potential of individuals, and by working for the balance between civilization and the wilds and for the good of humanity and its allied creatures, they motivate everyone to do their part, alone and with their companions, to plead the cause of Good everywhere.

They are concerned with preserving the deeds of the past so that people remember the lessons those events taught when they face the present: to quote the famous bard Asrafil Ioelthrech, they "bind the past to the present in order to open the doors of the future". Powerful individuals such as the Archmage Elminster, one of the chosen of Mystra, goddess of Magic, as well as his peers Alustriel Silverhand, Dove Falconhand, and Storm Silverhand, are well-known members of this organization, and all of them support the Harpers in every way: after all, they are among the most powerful people in Faerun and their visibility also serves as a reference for those who wish to join them, as if they were beacons in the darkness.

The Harpers usually operate in secret, alone or in small groups, traveling throughout the North and the Western Heartlands: they fight against evil organizations such as the Cult of the Dragon, the Iron Throne, the Red Wizards, the Zhentarim and, most notably, the resurrected church of Bane.

This might explain why the Harps intended to dismantle the Cells of the Black Church, including ours, and why we were willing to return the favor.

I wrote, then, that the object was to put our hands on this Sir Alfric: and so it was that I set out, in the dead of night, between the 5th and the 6th day of the second decade of the month with my armor and sword hidden in a false bottom of the cart that I was clumsily driving, towards the mansion of that knight at rest: and horrors and terrors accompanied me and I did not fear to move alone, in the light of a half moon.

Sweet Moon, I thought, hide yourself if you do not want to feel horror for what I am about to do.

Now, a clarification: from now on, I will be very detailed in my account, not only because I owe great importance to this moment of my life, but also because others will help me reconstruct the events that my memory, on the contrary, would have hidden, erased or put to sleep.

I arrived after a few days, at the end of the night, just before dawn, at the gates of the old man's august manor, while the West wind had risen, bringing with it memories and promises that came from who knows where and some wild beast was howling in the distance.

Everything was silent, and it was cold, I remember it well: but whether this depended on the half-torn clothes I was wearing, to simulate an attack, or on the actual temperature or on something else that was moving inside me, I could not say to this day. For good practice, I had also inflicted a few superficial wounds on myself, to make the attack I was about to tell more truthful.

I knocked on the door shaped like Torm's sacred symbol - how repulsive I felt! - and waited, in silence, for a long time: at first I thought that the place was abandoned, because it was quiet and silent, pervaded by a peace that I would have imagined to find in a cemetery, but that common and good-hearted people would have considered the peace of the righteous. I waited, knocked again, and as I waited for something to happen, I felt, strangely, a sense of anxiety rising in me: and this was something completely new to me, since it had never happened to me before to feel agitated for something that I was sure I could handle.

Just as I was about to grab the door, so as to knock a third time, I heard the dull sound of a latch being clicked, the sound of metal rattling and a chain slowly jingling, as well as the sound of a loophole being opened: a young man, perhaps one of Von Khellen's direct attendants, showed his eyes through a narrow opening, and asked me what I wanted.

I played the part that I had so often exploited to arouse pity and entice, the bare shoulder, a hint of breast in sight, small scratches and lacerations that I had inflicted on myself: and yet, strange to say, that young man did not seem particularly impressed, so much so that while I claimed to have been raped, and to have managed to escape by stealing the attackers' cart, I found myself thinking that perhaps I would have had better luck with a marble statue.

Finally, a nod, a simple assent, and after a few moments the door was opened: a beam of light hurt the darkness of the night as much as my eyes, but not enough to prevent me from noticing that the young man was not a fool: well armed, alert and careful, and his gaze full of every suspicion even if he apparently smiled: there and then, I thought that perhaps I had been betrayed, that someone had sent me there with the precise purpose of meeting my same end, offering a precious prey such as I could be, straight into the mouth of the Church of Torm negotiating who knows what favor under the table. However, I rejected that thought, as quickly as it had arisen, because that was not the way of acting of the Church of Torm, also called The Loyal Fury, nor did my own Church perpetrate that kind of betrayal, and I was confident that I had masked my real intentions, and my dark nature with a special spell: in any case, I was there now, and so I waited, in the entrance hall, while the palace was awakening, the pages anticipated their awakening and tried to understand what emergency had pulled them out of bed earlier than usual.

That young attendant, however, did not lose sight of me, while appearing courteous and offering to give me a blanket very kindly, noticing that my body was trembling slightly. I tried to touch his hand, to send him a grateful and provocative look but it had no effect: not even marble, I thought, but even mithrall would have been more malleable in comparison.

So I had no choice but to wait, and so it was that, a few minutes later, I finally learned that the elderly and widowed knight, consecrated to the Church of Torm, would receive me with alacrity.

Finally, I was escorted to the main staircase, the easiest to defend because some loopholes suggested the presence of traps, as well as some small structures, similar to shrines, were undoubtedly intended to house an armed guard each as well as small sacred effigies.

The whole place spoke of unostentatious wealth, of grace and nobility that did not require huge expenses to be preserved in that mansion.

I climbed the steps, turned to the right and, after a few words from the orderly, who introduced himself as Cledis, I was finally led, accepted and introduced into what must have been a study, in which every wall, even the door that was closing behind me, was intended as a bookcase, holding books, parchments and folders that appeared to be official-looking documents and protocols.

It was there, then, that my eyes rested for the first time on Sir Alfric, and I remember that he appeared even weaker and older than I had already supposed: he was a man decidedly advanced in years, much older than those fifty winters that he was said to have had, as if many worries and pains had engraved indelible signs on the old man's face and had made him age prematurely; however, I was not deceived in believing that he showed an inner strength, a decision, a resolution that I could not have found in people even half his age.

I came forward and presented myself, bowing my head and showing myself defenseless, with the blanket that was expertly sliding along my bare shoulder, ready to repeat, in detail, a moving and heartbreaking story of vulnerability and aggression, when I met his gaze, which he returned firmly, and my eyes embraced his and his mine: and he started and I too because in the same instant in which one looked into the other, I understood that he understood, and that we had recognized each other, despite having worked a spell to shield myself from the individuations of the alignment.

A look was enough for us to recognize each other.

Sir Alfric was aware that this girl who stood apparently defenseless before him was a terrible and dark nemesis, the purest evil against which he had measured himself; and I equally understood that nothing, no story or lie, no art of seduction or hidden force could have ensnared and conquered that man.

So I stopped that farce, almost as if I had chosen to stop that pantomime, and I began to look around, evaluating what options I had to fight, dragging with me the greatest number of those present, since I was unarmed and unable to survive in such numerical inferiority; yet, in my self-assurance and boldness I was confident of my ability to tear a weapon from one of the armors that were found here and there: and the old man seemed to think the same thing, looking at the others present, including the pages and his attendant, trying to understand how to protect them from a clash that would see so many victims and much blood flow.

It was a situation of total stalemate, no one daring to move, altering the balance, with only Sir Alfric and I being completely aware of the situation.

From here on I will often use direct language because the words that I will report have been discussed, re-proposed and already mentioned by me and by the witnesses present in official documents and in some judicial documents: my memory alone, decidedly not devoted to academic subjects, would never have allowed me to report, especially with great detail, things that were said by me or by others many years ago, especially considering the state of my alteration.

So, when I was thinking that I should try everything, he seemed to sense my intentions and raised his hand in a harmless but solid gesture that stopped me in my tracks: the left hand with the palm up, to symbolize Torm, but also to speak and I, as a knight, even a dark one, had to listen.

I report here that exchange of words, that dialogue that took place between us and that, in any case, remains imprinted in my soul:

I did not believe I deserved so much importance as to receive even the visit of the Black Angel. Death, it is often said, is a girl with pure eyes rimmed with black. So he said, and there was no mockery in his voice nor desire in his eyes, when he added, almost to himself, reflecting: ... such a wonderful creature... and so corrupt. I would really like to know, and understand, what has brought you to this point. He added, as if he were really talking to himself.

At these words, the fears of having been betrayed and sold by someone returned, but he, as if reading my mind, continued: Do not deceive yourself, Clio of Bryn Shander, because you are not the only one who enjoys, even if undeservedly in my case, the favor of his divinity. He hinted at a smile, but without joy: indeed, I had the feeling that he was pondering whether to attack me right then and there, or wanted to try the path of dialogue. There are many ways in which the Divine Will manifests itself, graceful and strong, resistant but merciful, whether in the form of a clairvoyance, a prophecy, a dream... or a simple but fortunate intuition.

I replied, therefore, since lying seemed a useless waste of time: You seem to know everything already, oh Noble Knight: what fate then is reserved for me? Am I your prisoner? Your slave? Or do you wish it to be yours, and that's it? If so, you have only to ask, my Lord, and to remove those present so that I can do whatever you tempt to redeem my freedom.

"My Lord", yes: it was the first time that I used that expression with such condescension and mockery that my words dripped with venom. And it was after that moment that, when I finally returned free in my mind and heart, I chose to call everyone as "My Lord" or "My Lady": because it is right that I should be the last of the last, and serving should be the only way to atone, remembering what I have done and have tried many times to do.

However, I feel that I cannot digress because, of so many underground hairs, of so many streams that conspired to crumble the sand castle of my certainties, it was that meeting that was decisive for me. And the answer I got was ... polite. That man was kind, to whom he would not hesitate to tear his heart from his chest during an embrace, and make his attendant eat it.

I think I am no longer old enough for these things, my girl: by trying to seduce me, you would ruin your, otherwise well-deserved, reputation. Furthermore, I know only too well, from what I have had to hear, that seducing and killing is only a quicker way for you, but that the Will of Him who guides you is strong, to the point that you are a warrior, a dark crusader, terrible, valiant even in hatred, and that treating you as a mere seducer would be an unforgivable offense towards you. No, my girl, I am not mocking you,” he added, noticing my expression, “but you must realize that years of martial service to any deity leave their mark, and my eyes are not yet so weak as not to notice the tiny imperfections that remain on your skin, despite the use of ointments, fabrics, protections and padding, you so often employing field armor; nor is my sense of smell so impaired as not to perceive the odor of steel and blood that has accompanied you since you set foot in this room. I do not want to disrespect those you have deceived and killed, but I wonder how one can fail to notice certain things: or, perhaps, it is only a benefit of age that brings with it the peace of the senses, that makes you, Black Angel, a splendid creature, but whose favor I do not desire to win, neither in my bedchamber, nor anywhere else... even if I do not doubt that you would be worthy of your fame.

By then I knew I had no choice, and that to deny would be futile: I told him, in plain words, that I was here to take his life, to conquer this place for my Church and to enslave those present to the Dark One's dominion or to kill them all if they refused. And he was silent, heavy in his action, and many wrinkles were painted on his face: and none of the bystanders uttered a word, and the light of day had become more intense though unhealthy, as if it presaged a day of rain. Only Sir Alfric's attendant, Cledis, seemed inclined to make the swords sing, in the name of the principle that the best defense is offense.

But before even that could happen, it was Sir Alfric who spoke again, rising to his feet with all the dignity that a man could show when he is startled in the night, and finds such an angel of death in his home. And so he spoke, and I still remember him:

I give you this day to prepare, Clio of Bryn Shander, or Khalis, as I have also heard You have called Yourself since You left the frozen lands of the North. I am sure that You have drawn upon many resources to ensure Your success in Your unwholesome enterprise today, presenting Yourself as a victim in need of protection: therefore a part of Your power is already exhausted or not destined to sustain a prolonged conflict. You would not be able to meet me now, to the best of Your ability, in single combat.

It was there, at those words of apparent sufficiency, that I exploded, and that any manifestation of dark power that accompanied me began to flow freely, threatening and blinding for those present, like a river in flood of hatred and wounded pride:

You old fool! Are you insinuating that I am not able to beat you as and when I want, even without armor and with nothing but a dagger? I smiled, and so I spoke, threatening and drunk with malevolent awareness. Do you know who I am? Do you know in the name of WHOM I come and speak? Do you have any idea of the Power that you are challenging with these false polite words of yours? I do not need to prepare myself, not as much as you may have to write your epitaph.

I remember well that I felt a burning rage, but the apparent serenity of the man unnerved me: I no longer knew fear, strong in the favor of my God, but felt that every word I said was little more than an empty threat, the bark of a puppy barking at the moon, with the same probability of influencing its course. Sir Alfric continued:

"I do not want to threaten you. But I want there to be no doubt in your hearts that, when you face me tomorrow morning, at this hour, you will be in the best state of mind, body, and soul, with your dark divine resources restored, and with no other concern than how to take my life.

I want there to be no doubt in your hearts when you and I fight that nothing has failed you that is due to fatigue, or those scratches you probably inflicted on yourself to make the role of victim believable, or the less obscure prayers you have memorized, or the absence of your best equipment.

Tomorrow morning, at this hour, in single combat, You and I: and may fortune smile on the one who is more firm in his convictions, more powerful by mere physical strength."

I remember that I laughed, knowingly, coarsely, with an unhealthy cheerfulness: I had never been so powerful, so sure, madly, of myself: "So, you admit? You know you are inferior to me and you trust to beat me with gossip and with the favor of Your God, weak and old as you?"

Perhaps it was a mistake, because those words seemed to rejuvenate the old man, who regained a prowess, an imposingness, that I would never have recognized in him: "...you can offend me as much as you want, but in my house, by intimation to your Blasphemous God, I do not tolerate slander about Him whom I serve. Do not mistake my chivalry for foolishness, nor the favor I grant you of preparing until tomorrow for any form of fear. You are a Knight yourself, even if corrupt, so keep your place."

Pride and strength seemed to flow from him, a placid river opposing the violent one that flowed from me: water against fire, calm against storm.

Yet, I understood and accepted, bowing my head, as he added "...so, if you wish to rest, I will give you a room on condition that you swear not to harm any of the inhabitants of the manor until we have met.If not, about six miles to the north is an inn full of adventurers, where, however, you may rest until tomorrow on condition that you do not create a disturbance."

I was forced to reply: "You know I have no wish to remain here, where the Eye of your God makes me uncomfortable and where I feel myself growing weak: yet I will do as you ask, a kindness from Knight to Knight in the name of your age." I said, drawing back, and looking boldly and smilingly about me: "....oh, I am sure I shall like to live here. After a few changes here and there, this place will be a fine one to claim." I cast a decidedly malevolent glance at Sir Alfric's attendant  "... and you, prepare yourselves well, for by nightfall tomorrow you will have a new Mistress and I a new plaything."

So I said, and prepared to go: in a day, then, I should give battle, challenging one who was more than twice my winters old, and who was said not to have trod a battlefield for years.

I was even surprised that I had been persuaded to postpone the fight, passing from an attempt to bribe and kill the old man to an honorable duel between opposing powers: and I even wondered what merit or fame I could receive in striking down someone so obviously inferior to me.

And yet, as my boots trod on the soft carpet that covered everything from the floor to the stairs, I felt uneasy: very few had dared to consciously cross swords with mine and even fewer had dared to directly challenge me. Did I then have doubts about my success? Oh, no, as I recall, I was sure I could do it: and yet, despite the reassurances I gave myself, I had to admit that something, during that encounter, had shaken me.
And so I walked away, escorted with three times the caution observed only a few minutes before by the soldiers and the orderly, along the stairs and the hall that I had previously walked as if I were already the owner. And I crossed the threshold, and the door closed heavily behind me, and the cart with my belongings was still there: all that remained was to take a room in the inn, attracting as little attention as possible, and prepare for the duel that would take place on the 10th day of the second decade.
